The ATL (A Tuesday League) was started by Julie Nagel (Westside Tennis
Club), as a "no-stress" women's
tennis league, of "A" & "Championship" caliber players.
This league was an "offshoot" from the Memorial Tennis League where one
level of "A" tennis was at the top of the league. Since there
was nowhere to move up when finishing high at the "A" level, several
teams decided to break away and form a new league. The majority of
these teams wanted a different league format and decided that they did
not want to play an eleven game pro set as in the Memorial Tennis
League. Thus it was determined that the ATL league would play two
sets with a 10 point tiebreaker instead of a third set to determine the
winner. The point system they developed was much different than
those used by any other league in Houston.
The ATL is about a relatively small number of teams all at the "A"
level, playing each other twice during the year, having no minimum
required points to remain in the league,
while still enjoying good competitive tennis. After Julie's retirement Cathey Woodward
(Houston Racquet Club) took over as League Coordinator for
the Fall of 2004. Then in December of 2004 Cathey passed
the baton to Kathe Boarman (Deerfield Village), who is currently the League
Coordinator.
